If you’re a business owner who hires freelancers, you know that flexibility is a key factor in their value proposition. But, what exactly does it mean for professionals to be able to “work on their own terms?” Our research has revealed some interesting insights about the nature of flexibility for freelancers.
Flexibility in Hours and Days
Whether it’s the freedom to choose when they work or the opportunity to shape their own hours, freelancers are able to design their own work experience. This level of control can be empowering and can lead to greater satisfaction with their jobs. For example, many of the professional’s interviewed indicated that they enjoy having more variety in their jobs and in the type of projects they take on. This allows them to engage with clients and projects that align with their personal interests and expertise.
While this autonomy can be a great benefit, it can also come with challenges. For example, many online freelancers struggle to find long-term or repeat business. Additionally, many freelancers struggle to manage fluctuations in their income. However, by developing effective strategies for budgeting and financial planning, these individuals can better handle the ups and downs of their freelancing life.
This level of flexibility is important for freelancers because it often means that they can work on a schedule that fits their family or other personal responsibilities. Our data and other research have shown that 50% of online freelancers report that they pursue flexible work because it allows them to meet their personal needs. This includes taking care of children or loved ones with physical or mental health conditions. It also includes caring for elderly parents or relatives who cannot live with them.
In addition to scheduling, online freelancers are able to negotiate how they get paid for their work. For example, some freelancers prefer to be paid on a project basis, while others may prefer to be paid by the hour. This is why it is essential to discuss and set expectations for how your freelancers will complete projects before hiring them.
This is especially important when hiring remote freelancers. If you can set clear expectations for what is needed from your freelancers, you’ll be able to avoid costly miscommunications down the line. For example, you might want to consider establishing milestones or breaking larger projects into smaller, more manageable sections. This will help both parties feel confident that the project will be completed on time.
It’s also a good idea to ask your potential freelancers to provide a sample of their work or previous client feedback before you hire them. This will give you an idea of their quality of work and how they respond to deadlines. This will ensure that your project is completed on time and accurately.
